HighWire plays a unique role in the online publishing business: affiliated with an academic library, a first-class research institution, and partner and colleague to scholarly societies who value the high quality and content of their journals, books and other materials. By working with HighWire, publishers gain the economies of scale and networking opportunities of working collaboratively in their business technology.
HighWire has been affiliated with Stanford University since 1995, with the launch of the Journal of Biological Chemistry (JBC Online). Science, the Journal of Neuroscience, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) soon joined with HighWire to become pioneers who defined today's online journal. HighWire quickly became known for combining cutting-edge technology with long-term organizational stability and has maintained a leadership position in the industry ever since.

An independent entity affiliated with Stanford University for over 20 years, HighWire is now a Silicon Valley company with investment provided by private equity technology specialist, Accel – KKR.
Our unique Intelligent Publishing Platform approach is at the heart of our vision to provide innovative, future- proofed digital solutions.
Our aim is to help publishers and their institutional customers to:

Develop and grow new revenue streams.
A proud academic heritage
Founded by Stanford University Libraries in 1995, HighWire Press was formed to help academic publishers to host peer-reviewed content online.
The Journal of Biological Chemistry published by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, was the first to launch on the HighWire platform.
In 2014, Highwire Press enjoyed a significant equity investment from the technology fund, Accel-KKR. This has enabled us to invest in the technology that keeps our customers at the forefront of digital innovation, while retaining our academic integrity.
Today, HighWire’s Intelligent Publishing Platform supports over 3000 journals, books, reference works, and proceedings.

Part of the publishing community
We work in partnership with the publishing community, helping to monitor trends and anticipate demands.
One of the ways we do this is by supporting a Publishing Advisory Committee and a Libraries Advisory Committee, bringing together luminaries from both disciplines to inform our Intelligent Publishing Platform development.
We also share best practice through exclusive events such as the HighWire Publisher Meetings held in the US and Europe, and our ongoing webinar program.
